Coca Col An Epidemic Spreading Throughout The United States
Introduction Diabetes is an epidemic spreading throughout the United States. 29 million people in the United States currently live with diabetes. (ââ¬Å"Center for disease control and preventionâ⬠, 2016). Coca Cola and Pepsi are two of the top soda distributers around the globe. Coca Cola has been a company since 1886 (ââ¬Å"The History of Coca Colaâ⬠, 2014). On the other hand Pepsi has been avaible to the public since 1965 (ââ¬Å"History of the birthplaceâ⬠, 2013). These two companies have had over one hundred years combined to advertise, and sell their extremely un-healthy sugar filled beverages. That has aided the diabetes epidemic that is currently in the United States. If one consumes too much soda they will begin to have many health problems, whichâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the years past scientists have recorded the number of deaths for each country that are because of or related to the over consumption of sugary carbonated drinks. Mexico has the most with a total of 404.5 million deaths, and the United States has the fourth most with 124.9 million deaths (Gebelhoff, 2015). With those statistics it can be concluded that consuming too much soda will lead to deadly disease, and possibly death. Next, it is shown through the nutrient facts how unhealthy soda is. The daily recommend sugar intake for adult males is 37.5 grams (Gunnars, 2015). The nutrient facts of one single 12 fluid ounce can of Mountain Dew contains 46 grams of sugar (ââ¬Å"Calorie Countâ⬠, 2016). That is nearly 10 grams higher than what the recommended daily amount. A person would be going over the recommended amount without even considering other foods they ate throughout that day. By the end of the day a person could consume as much as twice the daily recommend amount, if they do not watch what they ate for that day. This simple statistic proves that drinking to many sugary beverages such as soda is not good for your health. In the next section of this project we will take a more in depth closer look into what actually happens to your body when humans consume too many sugary beverages. Also, how addicting caffeine is. Then there will be a discussing about individuals trying to cut down on the amount of soda they drink and the effects it has on

Counseling Research - 1570 Words
Analyzing Interventions: Solution Focused Brief Therapy Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to show how using different research methods such as: quantitative, qualitative, single-case designs, action research, and outcome-based research is used to form an intervention focused on an adolescent with any kind of phobia based on the Solution-Focused Brief therapy. Not to retract in time, but to help the client come up with a possible solution of their phobia within a short amount of time. Something very interesting that I noticed in this research was that they were very aware about the clientââ¬â¢s culture (multicultural) background in order to be able to understand how they would attend them best. Provide a summary of the state of research as it relates to your topic of interest. (1-2 pages) As noticed in my articles I wasnââ¬â¢t focused on a specific type of phobia but just all in general. I found this topic to be important to me because my mom happens to have phobia of snakes and gets these ââ¬Å"anxiousâ⬠attacks that as I was reading in the articles itââ¬â¢s a common sign in most patients. First thing I saw in relation to my topic is that in order to have a successful care the patient needs to be willing to try the things the counselors ask, but most of all is to establish that trust between counselor and client. Start with little steps at a time where the client starts achieving small goals at a time to eventually decrease to loose the phobia completely. Discuss any legal and ethical considerations regarding the research examined. (1-2 pages) With phobias it may not necessarily be illegal, but it may cause a deeper problem if therapy is not done correctly. For example, allowing the client to immediately be submerged into a room where for instance the phobia was bees and the room was full of bees.Show MoreRelatedCareer Research : Mental Health Counseling1947 Words à |à 8 PagesCareer Research Mental Health Counselors maintain a confidential interaction with a family or individual dealing with mental and emotional health in order to initiate and strategize a goal of treatment. string(106) " such that company transparency is relatively existent for those who can get hold of certain information\." The only thing in this world that is constant is change. This is a pretty well known saying which existed as long as I can remember. Looking back 50 years and more from today, I can recall how we used to tackle in class about how people have lived centuries ago. We will write a custom essay sample on The Effects of Evolving Technology on Business Industries or any similar topic only for you Order Now Globalization is the result of humansââ¬â¢ endless search for improvements and technological innovations. It is an integration of economy, labor and technology all over the world, even across international borders. This movement has increased the flow of capital, goods, competition and labor across borders which, in turn, had deeply changed the true meaning of citizenship. Today, the upsurge of developments in technology has an undeniable effect on how organizations function within and with other institutions. For an organization, its success and failure greatly depends on how the organization was structured to work. The drive to improve peoples living pattern is still the same drive or factor which triggers international firms to globalize their operations and with that, todayââ¬â¢s latest technology makes the companyââ¬â¢s and consumers life easier It enable companies to reduce cost by using powerful equipment and machineries while consumers can have easier access to the newest products in the market. The evolution of a new technology poses both threats and opportunities within the industry dynamics and alters the competitive forces. Industry leaders face the possibility of losing their number one spot and being replaced by new entrants and underdogs (because barriers to entry may be lowered). Therefore, technology transformations may provide major shifts in industry dynamics. Depending on its organizational capabilities, it may be good or bad to make drastic adjustments to the existing organization when a disruptive innovation occurs. Disruptive change occurs so intermittently that there is no routine response to them. How to adjust its new product development process depends on the organizations capabilities. Capabilities are its resources, processes (how they transform resources to products), and corporate values. While resources are adaptable to change, processes are not as flexible, and values are even less flexible. Therefore, when a disruptive technological change takes place, a company must look to its capabilities. If the change requires a tremendous amount of financial resources that the company does not have, then they obviously cannot invest in the change, on the flipside, if a large capital firm faces the same change, the investment in the disruptive technology may be so small that it is not worth their more valuable time. The same scenario goes for processes and values. Large firms may be so large, that altering their processes to suit a change may be too burdensome whereas smaller firms may have a much easier time making adjustments in their processes. In addition, it is more likely that a smaller firmââ¬â¢s values may be more flexible for disruptive change than large companies whose longstanding values are not easily adaptable. To overcome the natural inertial found in most large organizations, managers may create new structures within the organization where new processes can be developed. This involves taking out employees with the required capabilities and drawing a new boundary around them. When the organizationââ¬â¢s values may not be compatible with the new processes, firms may create a whole new business venture which is wholly owned by the firm but located in a new location with the people and other resources necessary to create an environment conducive to the new process. And last, when a firm doesnââ¬â¢t have the supporting values, resources or processes for sustaining a new process, it may acquire another firm which does. Several factors may impact particular stages in the evolution of a new technology. For example, technological advances, changes in what consumers want or need, and changes in regulations may trigger a technology evolution. In addition, industry transformations often feed of environmental changes. However this necessary transformation, once triggered, does not actually begin until managers notice this need and act upon it. Once acting, managers seek to experiment, and this experimentation deeply impacts the industry as it helps shape what the new industry structure will be. Consequently, as experiments fail, the number of firms in the industry generally is cut in half, but occasionally may increase. An industryââ¬â¢s response to a new technology determines when and how the technological transformation will occur. Without managerial insight and decision making related to the technology, the current industry structure will persist. Managers are essentially the ones investing in these new technologies and they choose how and when to market them to the public, and therefore have ultimately the initial control over the transformation. If the industry as a whole does not respond favorably to the technology, they may not choose to invest and market it, therefore stunting its evolution. On the contrary, if they respond favorably, it helps accelerate the evolution of the transformation. If the industry as a whole is indecisive meaning some favor some do not and some are on the fence, the transformation may only see moderate growth, and depending on which direction opinions are swayed (for or against the technology), the transformation may be completed or the evolution may never meet its peak. One of the first innovations of technology was the mainframe system and it was during the 1960ââ¬â¢s that computers and such started to impart in organizations and firms. The classic ways of hierarchal management systems started to disintegrate during these times. Through technological change, globalizing the operations of an international company could put up a plantation where they can reduce their labor cost. Not denying the fact that different people from different countries have different tastes, international companies could also personalize their products according to the consumers or markets preferences without eliminating their standards and trademark. Before, information control was basically handled by those in managerial positions in a linear manner according to rank. With these systems of technology, information was handled as such that company transparency is relatively existent for those who can get hold of certain information. You read "The Effects of Evolving Technology on Business Industries" in category "Essay examples" The onslaught of developments in technology has triggered organizational structure alterations. These changes can be illustrated by considering two key variables: the location of information and the location of decision rights in the organization (Brynjolfsson E. and H. Mendelsson). With the innovative technological systems today, important information can now possibly be available to all employees or workers in an organization at all level. Before, information handling and privilege was limited to the persons that directly handle them. Now, the responsibility of handling information is left to information technologists or technicians. The technicians then put data or information into databases which are accessible to all components of the organization For example, an organization can have a website, regularly maintained and updated by professional information technologists. Here, employees, managers and customers alike, can log on to the website and access whatever information they needed. Furthermore, having websites is also a great advantage since helpful feedbacks are easier to get from both customers and employees. The growing need for technology innovations paves way to strengthening certain industries in a corporate world; like data management services, computer engineers, information technologists, software designers or engineers and so on and so forth. Although there are still organizations or companies that are hesitant to use information technology, a growing number of organizations are opening to the possibility of restructuring their organizations to accommodate the privileges of using the modern information systems of today. Seeing as technology innovation not only saves time and money; it is also efficient and very flexible with respect to the organization that opts to infuse it in their existing structure. Not only does it revolutionize an organization from within. Through the substantially used World Wide Web, organizations can communicate and cooperate with other organizations in a faster, more efficient and cheaper way. Today, with the use of virtual offices, it is possible to close deals and agreements from participating people around the world without physically meeting each other. Nowadays, as more organizations focus on the importance of information flow, organizational structures continue to change into more complex systems.à As a result, there is also a continuous drive to make more improvements and advancement in the field of technological innovation. Nowadays, laptop and desktop have been swamped by new connectivity options. There are various of USB devices like Digital cameras, iPods, PDAs, FireWire, thumb drives and MP3 players; with current technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and infrared (IrDA). With all these growing popularity of mobile gadgetry facilitating flexible working, evidently employees could work on the move. Endpoint systems today are easily available. They are user friendly and normally come with more than one feature. With all these conveniences, it also means that employees could be carrying around large amounts of sensitive information unaware of the potential risks. Not only can confidential data be lost, employees could also unwittingly introduce malware onto the network while uploading work from portable devices. However, together with this mobility in work, come various viruses which will bust your files as well as your gadgets. The influence of technology made a very big impact in the lives of people of todayââ¬â¢s generation as well as totally changes the definitions of some of the worldââ¬â¢s necessity, comfort and luxury. Whether it is a thing or a hobby, the identification of these classes has been change as time goes by. A car which was once called a luxury has been changed overtime and has now become a necessity. Televisions which was once only owned by royal families and other prominent people has now become a household item of which it already has become a necessity for it is where people get ideas of what is happening around them. Even though cars and televisions made living mush more accessible than before, the public is increasingly concerned about global warming and the negative environmental impacts of vehicles. (Clean Cars Alliance) Simple living as it is, our grandfatherââ¬â¢s grandfather would ride on horses, plant trees and vegetables, raise cows, pigs and chicken, living under one roof with a family, sitting warm in front of the fireplace. These are the few comforts that men used to acquire. Back then, when a person owns a car, another home, have jewelries, it has been said that the person had lived luxuriously. But today, when technologies have changed, some of the past decades luxuries had become todayââ¬â¢s necessities such as cars, cellular phones, different gadgets. Not only material things are affected but also of a manââ¬â¢s way of living. In, conclusion technology impacts should be seen as they truly are and not covered up by the media or industry, and even if they are individuals should be educated enough to realize the positives and negatives. If a company wishes to pursue becoming the industry technological standard, they must first be aware of the competitive strategies they can adopt to increase the probability of success. First, it is important to understand the need for a strong installed base. The installed base is the amount of customers/users of a particular piece of equipment or product that is necessary for the technology. Increasing the installed base for the technology is key, because a large installed base means there will most likely be a greater availability and widespread use of compatible products/software/applications. If the installed base for your technology is large and there is a large availability of applications or widespread use of compatible products, then your technology is another step closer to becoming the standard. With that, your technology is more valuable to consumers since they can use it in more places. A greater installed base, more available compatible products and providing greater value to the consumers leads to greater demand for the technology. As this continuous cycle keeps increasing the demand for your technology, it is well on its way to becoming the industry standard. A manager should ask several questions. First, it is important to know if a technology standard is needed or even desired in the industry. Second, it is important to perform market research to learn what customers want or need, this will help make the technology the standard if it satisfies the customer. Third, it is important to understand the market as a whole paying particular to competitors. Pursuing a technology standard makes sense for a firm when there is no current standard and one is desired by the industry. In addition, for some companies, becoming the industry standard may be essential in maintaining their leadership position and ensuring their existence in the long run. à There are different avenues that one can receive formal and informal education dealing with technological literacy, but there is always room for improvement, much like with technology itself. Going back to the saying that the only thing in this world that is constant is change, we understand that change is inevitable. And just like the billiard balls, it is change which moves people to experiment and innovate, making the world more comfortable and luxurious, yet complicated. Change, constant as it is, has the power to move, improve and change lives. Where men once lives only with necessities, change have been able to make men of today experience luxuries and comforts by making it todayââ¬â¢s necessities. With this, the luxuries of the past has been a need of today, making the luxurious living from the past a more simple and yet more challenging living of today REFERENCES Brynjolfsson E. and H. Before seven years the company was not so much popular but now many persons know about the company. The company provides supportive and open environment to its employers. The company has achieved popularity in just short period of time. Google is one of the most recognized brands in the world. The main source of revenue generation of the company is the online advertising services. In Google, people do not believe in impossible concept. People believe that everything is possible. People use creative ideas to deal with complexities. The emp loyees of the companies generate innovative ideas by focusing on general problems which people face every day. Google services are making the life of people easy. People can easily assess books, music, apps, maps and other services any time. Google wants to provide right service at right time to right person. Google is the best company in which each person wants to work because company provides various benefits to employees and customers (Insch Florek, 2008). Key messages about Google as an employer In Google, the employer hires the person who has creative skills and can contribute in organizations growth. In 2007, only 16,805 employees were working in Google but in 2016 the figure was 72,053. In Google many persons work, some persons may come from management background and some may come from engineering background. Googles employers do not select the candidates on the basis of qualification only. The employers select the candidate who has creative thoughts and can provide benefits to the company (Savoia, Copeland, 2011). In Google, the employers believe that if two persons who are exactly same in terms of job experience, demographics and age, and one person has potential to deal with challenges and other person does not like to face challenges then the employer will hire the first person because in Google the employees have to face various challenges and they have to deal with them (Everett, 2011). Today Google gets around 2 million job applications in a year but the employers select only around 4000 people. The employers want role related knowledge in the candidates. The employers search those candidates who know something about the work because expertise in work will come when employees will get training and when they will solve certain problems. For technical roles the employers search candidates from technical background. The candidate should ready to accept challenges and should ready to learn new things. The candidate should be able to tackle complex projects. The candidate should have analytical skills, technical skills, leadership skills and managerial skills (Kuntze Matulich, 2010). Google recruitment strategy In a Google recruitment video it is shown that the employers provide very supportive environment to employees. Employees are given tasks and the supervisors help the employees to understand and manage the task. The employers explain role related information to the employees. In the training period the management provides training to each employee. The employers greet each candidate and make them comfortable. The company wants the candidate who is not only good for present but also beneficial for future. The company attracts right talent by providing amazing environment to employees. The working environment of the company is very healthy as the there are no so much limitations (Davenport, Harris Shapiro, 2010). In Google, employees can enjoy their work life. To increase creativity in employees, brainstorming methods are also used. The management provides motivation to employees to give creative ideas. Company provides various opportunities to employees for career development. They pr epare employees to deal with problems. The core values of Google are good environment, innovation, business ethics and care for community. Employees can get best work culture in Google. Google uses motivational theory of human resource management to attract right talents. Abraham Maslow gave the theory of motivation to motivate individuals. According to Maslow, human beings have different needs and people are motivated by those needs. Major human needs are psychological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs (Deery, 2008). Psychological needs include basic needs like the needs of food and water. The employees must have enough money to purchase food and water. Safety needs means the employees want to work in a safe environment. People do not want to do dangerous jobs. Social needs means people want to get good environment where they can enjoy work and they spend time with good friends. If an employee feels isolated then he or she will not like to work in the organization. People are motivated when they get freedom and independence. People like to get respect, recognition, importance, attention and appreciation (Becker Bradley, 2007). People like to work at the place where they can get all things. If employees feel that their efforts are not valued at the company then they search other companies because it is intrinsic need of humans that they want to get appreciation for their efforts. Self-actualization needs mean each person wants to get something in his or her life and the person makes efforts to achieve it. People are motivated when their final desire is satisfied (Christensen Hughes Rog, 2008). Motivation works as positive force that provides right direction to people. People get attracted when they think that there needs can be satisfied by the company. From the video it can be analyzed that Google Company is focusing on each need. The company is providing various facilities to its employees. Google Company is also providing safe and friendly environment to employees. Company also provides growth opportunities to employees so that employees can make good career in the company. Challenges in recruitment process Companies may face various challenges in recruitment process. Some major challenges are mentioned in the given paragraph. Sourcing talent is the major challenge companies like Google can face. In the current market many persons are looking for good job opportunities. In the market talented and skilled persons are also looking for a good platform (Bakker Demerouti, 2007). The companies may face difficulty in searching talented persons. The human resource managers use limited source to find capable and talented persons for the job position. The competition is rising rapidly. All companies want talented people who can give more benefits to them. All companies are using similar sources to find persons and a person likes to work with the company where he or she can get maximum benefits so it becomes difficult for the company to differentiate itself from its competitors (Townsend, 2007). Many employers believe that finding a talent person is like searching a needle in the dark room. Scree ning process is also a complex task. It is not easy to search talent persons from large pool of applicants. The employers also have to consider various points like candidates capability, creative skills, risk taking capability and analytical skills for selecting a candidate (Bhatnagar, 2007). Conclusion Google is a popular company. Basic information about the company and its products and services are given in the report. In the report key messages about Google as a company and as an employer are presented. The recruitment strategy of Google is also described. Google hires only those persons who can handle many things and who can give creative ideas to handle complex tasks. The employers hire those candidates who have role related knowledge and who can handle different situations. The employers do not select the candidates on the basis of their grades. They check the ability and capability of the candidate. Company provides supporting environment to all employees. Some challenges that companies like Google would face in recruitment process are also elaborated References Bakker, A. B., Demerouti, E. (2007). How Far Can People Look Forward with Confidence to Growing free essay sample
Little kids always have dreams about growing up. They imagine being an astronaut, a firefighter, or a princess. When theyââ¬â¢re young, all they want is to be old. Little do young children know, growing up has itââ¬â¢s side effects. Today, senior citizens make up a majority of the worldââ¬â¢s population. While growing old, it has itââ¬â¢s benefits like learning from mistakes and becoming wiser. It also has itââ¬â¢s disadvantages like health risks. As people grow older, they come closer to death but also experience a lot throughout their life spans. While some people look forward with confidence to growing old, other fears the aging process. Everyone who lives will eventually die. With life, comes death. A big question asked in todayââ¬â¢s society is, ââ¬Å"Where do we go once we die? â⬠Many religions have their own beliefs. One religion, Christianity, believes that through Godââ¬â¢s son, Jesus Christ, we will live eternally in Heaven. In order to get to Heaven, one must live for God and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without believing in Jesus, one will go to Hell. Christians who are strong in their faith and live by The Holy Bible know where they will go once they die, which provides them with confidence in growing old. Other religions, such as Hinduism, believe in reincarnation into a new form based on their previous life. If one lives a good and pure life and lives by the Rig Veda, they will be confident for their next life. Having a strong faith in a religion can instill confidence in a person when it comes to growing old. Some people, even without religious beliefs, can look forward with confidence to growing old. An example of this kind of person is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah grew up physically and mentally abused, never looking forward to the next day ahead of her. She never thought she would be living life how she does now, as a world renown talk show host and hero for many. Oprah has established many foundations and organizations that supports charities, education of children, empowerment of women, and families in America suffering from poverty. She has also created many schools and orphanages globally, particularly in Africa. Not only has she gained so much joy from making a difference in the world, but sheââ¬â¢s also gained the position as one of the Top 10 Wealthiest Women in the world. Oprah currently makes over 250,000,000 a year and is financially set for the rest of her life. Now as sheââ¬â¢s getting older, she doesnââ¬â¢t have to worry about work or paying off any debts. She has the opportunity to live the rest of her life knowing that sheââ¬â¢s made a difference in the world and will always be remembered. Because of this womanââ¬â¢s benevolent accomplishments, Oprah can look as far as she wants with confidence to growi ng old. This shows that those who work hard to overcome personal adversities can benefit from these efforts, thus changing their future proactively. Although there are many positive factors that provide confidence in growing old, there are also many negative ones that can replace oneââ¬â¢s confidence with fear. Health is a major issue with senior citizens. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Disease is a non-reversible brain disorder that is very prevalent among senior citizens. This disease initially starts with memory loss and confusion, leading to behavior and personality changes as well as a decline in cognitive abilities, like decision making and language skills. This disease is the most common cause of dementia among 65 year olds and older. There are no medications to slow the progression of this disease, which has taken over 90 percent of senior citizens in the U. S. The prevalence of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Disease is thought to reach about 107,000,000 people by the year 2050 and according to the National Institute of Health, almost 4,500,000 Americans are living with this disease. This health risk that comes with growing older can definitely hinder the confidence of a person because of the negative outcome. Another reason why people today donââ¬â¢t look forward with confidence to growing older is because of financial stability. Currently, America is in the full throes of recession. The credit crisis wonââ¬â¢t resolve itself for at least 20 years and banks are hemorrhaging citizensââ¬â¢ money. With growing old, comes retirement. People who are living in fear of their retirement are, namely, the baby boomers. These are people who were born after World War || to the mid 1960ââ¬â¢s. Most of these people are approaching retirement but still have jobs and are living from paycheck to paycheck. Theyââ¬â¢re relying less on social security provisions and more on investments and pension plans to survive. The population of these baby boomer senior citizens are increasing, providing the government with a fear that none of the citizens will ever get to any meaningful financial degree. This leaves these people in an uncertainty of how theyââ¬â¢re going to support themselves after retirement, providing them with a trepidation of getting to that imminent point in life. People do look forward to growing old everyday, however, there are those who do not. With growing older, one gets to experience life along with learning from it. People also have to experience hardships and turmoil. Elderly individuals want to look back on their lives and know that it was worth living. As a person ages, worries definitely increase when it comes to health and financial stability. Confidence is also instilled when a person has a strong belief or has made a positive difference in the world. Even though there will always be negative effects of growing older, there will always be positive ones too.

The travel industry Essay Example
The travel industry Essay The travel industry has exploded manifold in size over the past fifty years or so. Since the first commercial flights took off, the airline industry on the whole has been trying to find ways for servicing their customers in a better way. Where time is crucial and managing passengers all over the world in a safe and timely fashion is the key, the task becomes even harder especially with hundred of routes and airplanes traveling the skies at the same time. Scheduling is even tougher with the time differences between locations and customer preferences make it an even more arduous task. Hence over the years, major airlines came up with computerized systems to help them run things a bit more smoothly. A global distribution system (also known as a computer reservation system) is a computerized system specifically used to conduct transactions related to the travel industry. This system is capable of storing and retrieving information and based on this, booking flights for customers via trav el agents. Main users of such systems are therefore travel agencies, airlines etc. Hence a GDS essentially takes data from airlines in terms of routes, schedules, capacity etc and routes it to travel agents accessing it from various points around the world. Every travel agent then books a seat for each passenger and this data is updated on the system they are using. The travel marketplace is a very complex one. It has a global scope where millions of buyers (travel agents and the public) and sellers (hotels, airlines, car rental companies, etc.) interact to exchange travel, leisure, tourism services. These services are not limited to these but include everything related to travel from car rentals down to taxi pick ups. The places, in which buyers search for these services are these global distribution systems, which have become electronic supermarkets that link buyers to sellers and allow deals to be made quickly and easily. The four major global distribution systems so far have enj oyed an oligopoly sustained by the high entry costs required to build the IT booking systems to link airlines, hotels and car rental operators with travel agents and consumers. In the present times however, they are operating in a fast-changing market typified by evolving patterns of consumer behavior, the emergence of new online sales channels, and a low-cost air model. The current airline industry all over the world is based more or less on four major systems namely: 1.à à à à à Amadeus 2.à à à à à Galileo We will write a custom essay sample on The travel industry specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The travel industry specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The travel industry specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer 3.à à à à à Sabre 4.à à à à à Worldspan According to statistics, Amadeus is the current leader with a total share of 31% followed by SABRE with 30.8%. Galileo falls in third with 26.4% and Worldspan fourth with 15.1%. These statistics are measured keeping in mind the reach of these systems being the number of ââ¬Ëpointsââ¬â¢ they are accessed through and along with the number of airlines they cater to. Each point is a point of access through which travel agencies all over the world log onto the system to book flights. In addition to these major four, there also exist smaller or regional GDSs, including Tapas (Korea), SITAââ¬â¢s Sahara, Axess (Japan), Infini (Japan), Fantasia (South Pacific), and Abacus (Asia/Pacific). These systems however serve particular interests or specific regions or countries. The airline industry created the first GDS (SABRE by American Airlines) in the 1960s as a way to keep track of flight schedules, availability, and prices. Although they make use of legacy system technology, the GDSs were actually among the first e-commerce systems in the world to facilitate B-2-B (Business to Business) electronic commerce as early as the mid 1970s. The work was essentially started by SABRE (owned by American Airline) and Apollo (United) by installing propriety internal reservations systems in travel agencies (self owned links to their system at travel agencies). Prior to this, travel agents made reservations in the traditional way; manually entering reservations into books. The airlines realized that by automating the reservation process for travel agents, they could make the travel agents more productive and essentially turn them into an extension of their sales force; an automated sales force akin to what UPS and Fedex do now through wireless technology. It is thes e original, legacy GDSs that today provide the backbone to the Internet travel distribution system.à It is no wonder that these systems were revolutionary in their own accord. Currently, travel is the most widely sold consumer product in the world. The Internet has proven to be the perfect medium for selling travel as it joins a vast network of suppliers (without the need of propriety systems to use log onto the GDS) and a widely dispersed consumer market together into a centralized market place. Almost 37 million of the 162-million active Internet users in the U.S. purchased travel online. Online travel bookings exceeded $23 billion in 2001, and are with expectations running high, are predicted to reach $63 billion by 2005 (Das, S., 2002).An internet distribution system is a computerized system which uses the internet to distribute information among its users. Unlike traditional approaches of having dedicated line and links to a system, these systems use the internet as the medium through which users log into a system and access data. Almost all GDSs are evolving towards Internet Distribution Systems and in the near future will be operational only through the internet. Sabre stands for Semi-Automated Business Research Environment. It is a computer reservations system (a global distribution system GDS) used by airlines, railways, hotels, travel agents and other travel companies. Sabre is thus not only sued for reserving airline tickets but also for reservations of any kind related to the travel industry; form hotel reservations to car rentals, train reservations, pickups drops etc. In short, Saber is capable of planning a customerââ¬â¢s travel right from the point of departure down to the point of arrival, stay and tourism as well. Sabre GDS is a unit of Sabre Holdings Sabre Travel Network division. Worldwide, the GDS reaches some 230,000 points of sale. In July of 1996, Sabre became a separate legal entity of AMR (parent company of American Airlines), followed by a successful initial public offering in October in which AMR released approximately 18% of its shares to be publicly traded. Sabre, represented in 45 countries, is a leading provider of technology for the travel industry and provides innovative products that enable travel commerce and services, and enhance airline/supplier operations.à It connects more than 60,000 travel agency locations around the world, providing content from approximately 400 airlines, 55,000 hotel properties, 52 car rental companies, 9 cruise lines, 33 railroads, and 229 tour operators. The Sabre business model is a strong one, and continues to make significant progress in advancing both its electronic travel distribution and its information technology solutions businesses.à Revenues have been growing steadily, and the company has embarked on a strategy that fully embraces diversification of its customer base and revenue streams. Sabre is considered to be one of the most significant and competitive GDSs due to the fact that it anticipates and takes advantage of the changes in the information economy and develops innovative practices, leveraging both human resources and technology systems. The system was developed in order to help American Airlines, who were facing a serious problem by the 1950s. Their system for booking flights was entirely manual Reserving a seat and writing a ticket took up to 90 minutes on an average. The system also had limited room for growth. Meanwhile, IBM had been working with the US Air Force on their Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) project that used a series of large computers to coordinate the message flow from radar sites to interceptors, dramatically reducing the time needed to direct an attack on an incoming bomber. The system used teletype machines located all around the world to feed information into the system, which then sent orders back out to teletypes located at the fighter bases. This was arguably one of the first online systems. Such a system was well suited for Amercian Airlines needs and thus in collaboration with IBM, SABRE was developed and it turned out to be a success. It cost a sum of $40 million to develop and install (about $350 million in 2000 dollars). The system took over all booking functions in 1964, at which point the name had changed to the more familiar SABRE. In 1972 the system was moved to IBM System/360 systems in a new underground location in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Originally used only by AA, the system was expanded to travel agents in 1976. It is currently used by a large number of companies, including Eurostar, SNCF, and US Airways. Sabre separated from American Airlines on March 15, 2000. The system is now a publicly traded corporation owned bye Sabre Holdings. The Travelocity website is owned by this company and serves as a consumer interface to the system. Sabre currently uses Web Services to link all its customers and dealers together. In the past, customers gained access to the Sabre GDS and those of other travel providers in a variety of ways using various forms of connectivity. Now Sabre Web Services (making use of leading-edge XML and SOAP technologies) streamlines that process, offering developers a single standards-based access to the GDS. This essentialy eliminates the need for agents and Web developers to understand proprietary codes and programming languages to connect their systems to the disparate data sources needed to create bookable Web-based travel offerings. Sabre connects over 60,000 travel agency locations worldwide and divides its customers according to the following categories: Airline Sabre Travel Networks key service is its airline reservation system. It provides pacesetting products and services that help improve performance and increase revenue opportunities. Car Rental Company Provides reservation capabilities for car rentals with a range of connectivity options to link inventory systems with the travel buying audience and is similar to the airline and cruise services. It also provides travel agency office automation tools, enables travel agencies to provide services via the Internet and provide reservation management, distribution and technology services to hotel properties. Other products include its key Airline Resevation system, GeThere, etc. In 2006, approximately 36.2% of Sabreââ¬â¢s revenue was generated from Travelocity, 54.4% from Sabre Travel Network and 9.4% from Sabre Airline Solutions based on segment results that included inter segment revenues. Compared with the previous, this was an increase of 30.5% for Travelocity, 1.3% for Sabre Travel Network and 8.3% for Sabre Airline Solutions (Yahoo biz, 2007).

Free Essays on A Males Territory
Hibbett Sports From the moment that I walked into the doors of Hibbett Sports, until the moment I left, it was obvious that I was in a maleââ¬â¢s domain. The clothes, equipment, organization, and even the employees were all screaming out masculinity. The lighting was poor, the colors were dark, and it smelled like a locker room. It was apparent that in this store the merchandise was meant for the male gender. I find this quite interesting given that women play sports equally as much as men do. Everything about this store was formed to fit the interest of men. It was completely different from that of a womenââ¬â¢s store and because of this I felt a little uncomfortable during my two visits to this store. The first sign that this store is male territory is through the smell of the store. The second that you walk into Hibbett Sports, you are knocked down by the stench of a locker room. Men like this smell because they can relate to it. They recall the times after their football, basketball, or baseball games. It reminds them of whatever memory that they may have of being a strong, sporty, sweaty man. Women on the other hand, do not like this smell at all. A womenââ¬â¢s store would have a sweet, fruity, or sexy aroma. This would be a type of smell that they can relate to. Because of the smell of Hibbetts when you first walk in, women are already being turned off and will not want to continue into the store. That makes this predominately male territory and women do not feel welcome here. Secondly, the colors of the store make this maleââ¬â¢s territory. Men prefer darker colors while women prefer lighter colors. From the signs, to the walls, to the carpet, and to the clothes, everything in Hibbett Sports is dark. The sign is black, the walls are gray, and the carpet is green. It almost resembles a football stadium with black signs, gray bleachers, and green turf. This definitely appeals to men.
